As long as they don't have to talk about their beliefs, ideas, or demonstrate knowledge for judgment by their peers, blogging for middle school kids should be okay.
I feel most students who are in middle school already have a facebook account, and would therefore be pretty comfortable navigating a blog. I feel parents would be the bigger challenge.
I think middle school students would love blogging. Some may think they are "too cool" to blog, but I think it is all about how the teacher implements it in the classroom. I think that students would find it very interesting and beneficial.
